Evan still hasn’t been over to meet my parents, so when I ask him if he wants to hang out at my house, he agrees right away. That and he’s also heading out of town with his dad for Thanksgiving, so this is kind of the last time I’ll see him until after the break.
When we arrive, everyone is already settled into their typical evening rituals. My dad is reading, while simultaneously monitoring two separate football games he’s recorded. Mom has retreated to her desk, where she’s still arranging something for the newest exhibit at the museum. My sister is off doing who knows what; in other words, her usual.
I haven’t really told my parents about Evan, so I’m kind of nervous to see how they react. I already told him that I want them to meet him as a friend first, and then work into the whole dating thing. Thankfully he understood.
My parents have always loved meeting my friends, and I was always fine with it since my friends seemed to get along with them really well. Of course, this was back in elementary school, and my parents have probably long since given up on anyone coming by the house who isn’t with my sister. But I remember visits from friends always being relaxed. Especially since my parents never really grilled them. At least not in an obvious way.
Of course, this time is different. Evan is the first friend I’ve had over since long before puberty, so my parents practically ambush him the second he’s in the door. Evan receives an onslaught of questions, covering pretty much his entire life history all the way through to his “future aspirations,” as Mom puts it.
Aside from how mortifying it is to see my boyfriend bombarded with questions, it is pretty cool getting to learn more about him. Although it is weird to think I’m hearing a bunch of new stuff after all this time together. I guess there are just some questions you don’t think to ask unless someone asks it first.
For the most part Evan plays along, and he even seems to be enjoying himself at some points. But Evan’s shyness does override some topics. Like discussing his family, or different things from his childhood.
Then, when Mom asks Evan if he’s dating someone, I interrupt the impending awkwardness by saying we’re going to play games in my room.
Walking down the hall, I remember the awful state of my room and brace for the sight of it. Reluctantly, I push open my door, exposing the overwhelming clutter covering nearly every square inch of floor.
Evan laughs, and steps in gingerly.
“Good to see I’m not the only one,” he says.
I start kicking piles aside, essentially mimicking the frantic cleanup that Evan did when I first saw his room. He even starts picking up some of my clothes, carefully placing them in one of the “stacks” I’ve hastily created with my foot.
At first it’s really sweet, but then I start to worry.
